“Belabouring the nuances of my fluid teen sexuality.” — Brittany Pierce, ‘Prom-asaurus’
In Season 2’s ‘Blame It on the Alcohol,’ Kurt was the mouthpiece for one stereoptypical view on bisexuality. It’s just a phase. Something you might do to fit in. Something you might go through before realising your real sexuality.
In Season 3, Brittany S. Pierce is living that dream. She has never been allowed to identify as bisexual, let alone discuss it seriously. Brittany’s sexuality is just a running ‘bi- in front of something cute’ joke plus one of Glee’s obnoxious meta shout-outs to Principal Figgins that she had spent a lot of time belabouring the nuances of her fluid teen sexuality.
That shit ain’t funny. Bisexuality is real, and so are the bisexuals who have to deal with these damaging misconceptions in real life. Why is Glee, of all shows, perpetuating harmful stereotypes? It needs to stop.
